Work is progressing. My students and I have been doing a lot of research on DirectX 12 and Universal Windows Apps. I have now begun incorporating what we have learned into a new game engine. I hope to have the first working engine in about a week. Once the engine is ready we will use it to create a game. That will help us make refinements to the game engine and test the performance of our game. Comments and questions are welcome.

Sounds good. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I am making some progress, especially now that I have a break from teaching.

The second edition is shaping up to be a major rewrite with lots of new features and examples. The code base is going to be all new. It will focus on creating Universal Windows Programs (UWP) for Windows 10 using C++ and DirectX 12.

I'm currently writing a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game using isometric tiles. It is only one of the complete games that will be included in the book.

Stay tuned.

Prof. Kelly.

I am very close to wrapping up the new game engine. I've lost track of how many hours of research were required to figure out how to do UWP programming in C++. You would think Microsoft could afford to hire someone to write some decent documentation. Anyway, I've done the research and figured things out so you won't need to. I'm working on the last few bits of the game engine now. Once I'm satisfied with the features in the game engine I'm going to write at least three complete games for inclusion in the book. I'm currently planning to include an isometric view RTS game, a classic side scrolling platformer and one other game type. I'm not sure on the third game example. I'm open to suggestions if you have any requests.

Hi, Prof Kelly!

I have been steadily making a 2D puzzle platformer using version 4.0 of your engine for about a year now.
I'm very excited at the possibility of a 2nd edition of the book.

I was wondering how soon you think it will be ready to release?
I was also wondering if you think it would be a huge pain in the neck for a mediumly-sized project currently using V4.0 to be made compatible with this 2nd edition?

Thanks!

The new game engine is 95% complete. I have tried to keep the new engine compatible with the old one where possible. Some of the structure is unavoidably different but it should be fairly straight forward to convert existing code. The new book and game engine code will be published in 2018.

I'm still working on the new game engine. I decided to add better physics, including rotation and friction.
